The Shawmut Avenue Pumping Station is located at 1482 Shawmut Avenue, approximately 2,900 feet to the north of Nash Road, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The site is bordered by Shawmut Avenue to the west and undeveloped land and wetlands on all other sides.
The pumping station building is a multi-level concrete structure with a rectangular footprint of about 12 feet by 22 feet. The lowest level of the structure extends to a depth of about 27 feet below exterior grade.
Two concrete wet wells are located adjacent to the pumping station building. The wet wells have a rectangular footprint of about 8 feet by 14 feet and extend to a depth of about 27 feet below exterior grade.
The planned construction for the Shawmut Avenue Pumping Station includes the removal and disposal of the existing pump station building, foundation, and wet well.
A pump station building, wet well, and valve vault are proposed for construction at a new location west of the former building. This will involve intrusive excavation to a depth of 47 feet below existing grade. Construction of this project began in 2024 and will be ongoing.
