The Howland Street Pumping Station is located at 111 McArthur Drive in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The site is bordered by McArthur Drive to the east, commercial properties to the north and south, and the JFK Memorial Highway to the west. Access to the site is from McArthur Drive. The Howland Street Pumping Station is a multi-level concrete structure that was built in the 1950s. The above-grade portion of the structure has an approximately rectangular footprint of about 28 feet by 14.5 feet. The below-grade substructure extends beyond the limits of the above-grade portion of the structure and has an overall footprint of about 36 feet by 48.5 feet. The lowest level of the substructure extends to a depth of about 23 feet below exterior grade.
The planned construction for the Howland Street Pumping Station includes the removal and disposal of the existing pump station building, influent bar screen structure, buried electrical building, building foundation, concrete pad, and the bituminous concrete pavement. A pump station building, screening building, and valve vault are proposed for construction at new locations east and west of the former building. Construction of this project began in 2024 and will be ongoing.
